Q. What should I do if I break down?
A. If your vehicle lets you down we'll be there for you. Here's some guidance about what to do in the event of a breakdown.
Q. How quickly will you get to me?
A. We don't like to keep you waiting, our average response time is around 44 minutes*.
* 44.07 mins based on 95,900 jobs from Agent Performance Review Report Dec 14 - May 15
Q. Will you fix my vehicle at the side of the road?
A. We fix over 4 out of 5 cars* at the roadside to get you moving again. If we are unable to fix your vehicle at the roadside we'll tow it to a local repair centre, but you will have to pay any repair costs directly to the repair centre.
If we can't fix your vehicle at the side of the road because it is unsafe to do so, we will tow it to a safe place so we can carry out any repairs.

Q. How far will you recover my vehicle if you’re unable to repair it at the roadside?
A. If you have local recovery on your policy we will recover you up to 10 miles from where you’ve broken down. If you have nationwide recovery, we will recover you to any destination of choice within the UK.
Q. How much is LV= Britannia breakdown cover?
A. Our competitive breakdown cover starts from just £30 a year, with five different levels of cover to choose from so you only pay for what you need. See our table of breakdown cover options, and choose which level of cover suits you best.
Q. Can I upgrade my level of cover once my breakdown policy has started?
A. Yes, you're able to upgrade your level of cover at any time. You can also add or remove personal cover, as well as change the vehicles covered. You're only able to reduce your level of cover at renewal or if your policy is within the first 14 days of receiving your breakdown cover documents.
Q. Do I need to upgrade my policy to cover me in the Republic of Ireland?
A. No, all our policies cover trips to the Republic of Ireland without the need to upgrade your cover.
Q. What's the benefit of adding personal cover to my breakdown policy?
A. Breakdown cover alone will only cover the vehicle on your policy.
By adding personal cover, you (and your spouse/partner at no extra cost) will be covered while driving or travelling in any privately owned vehicle in the UK if one of you are with the vehicle when the breakdown occurs and when we arrive to assist.
If you usually travel in other vehicles, it might be worthwhile considering adding personal cover to your policy. You can also add personal cover to any level of breakdown cover at any time during the life of your breakdown policy. We don’t need to know all these vehicles beforehand and will only ask for details if you break down.
Q. Are other members of my household also covered?
A. Yes, anyone driving the nominated vehicle will be covered for breakdown as long as they have insurance. To be covered in any other vehicle they'll need separate breakdown cover for that vehicle.
If you want to cover you and your spouse/partner in any other privately owned vehicle in the UK then you can add personal cover to your policy.
Q. How do I make changes to my breakdown policy?
A. Call us on 0800 756 8700 and let us know what details you need to change and we'll update your breakdown policy for you.
Lines are open: 8am - 8pm Monday to Friday, 8am - 5pm Saturday and Sunday, 9am - 5pm on bank holidays.
Q. I have UK & European Assist cover - which countries am I covered in?
A. If you have European breakdown cover your nominated vehicle is covered in the following countries in addition to the UK and Republic of Ireland:
Albania, Andorra, Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Malta, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia (West of the Urals), San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Tunisia, Turkey in Europe, Ukraine.
Remember European cover is for permanent named vehicles on your membership only and doesn’t apply to claims under Personal Cover
Q. What happens if I breakdown in Europe?
A. Remember to check out the country you are travelling to before you get there. Driving legislation and restrictions can differ widely between European countries and it’s best to be prepared. For example if you break down on a French Motorway / A road, you should contact the French police by calling from an orange emergency phone box, or dialling 112 from your mobile phone. The French police will then recover your vehicle off the motorway and charge you for the service. We will reimburse you for these charges on your return to the UK (you will need to send us the receipt as per the policy documents). Once you’ve been recovered off the motorway, you should then call us for assistance.
Q. I have personal cover, will this cover me in Europe?
A. If you have personal cover it extends to any private vehicle you or your spouse/partner travel in within the UK (including the Channel Islands, Isle of Man and Republic of Ireland). It doesn't extend to travel elsewhere in Europe.
Q. When will I get my insurance documents?
A. Our breakdown insurance documents are sent directly from our mailing house, and normally take 7-10 days to reach you.
Q. Why can’t I setup my cover online to start the same/next day?
A. Any new policy setup online comes into effect at midnight the day after tomorrow. However, if you wish to setup your cover to start the next day, please contact us on 0800 591 563, and we’ll be happy to help.
